If you’re someone who experiences the painful symptoms of migraines, you’re not alone. Migraines are one of the most common neurological disorders, and it’s estimated that they affect more than a billion people around the world every year. They’re not only painful; they can be debilitating and unpredictable, making it hard to enjoy things in both your personal and professional life.

While there is no “cure” for migraines, you can manage and reduce symptoms by avoiding triggers and implementing lifestyle changes and science-backed therapies like IV infusions for migraine relief. Here’s what to know about migraine symptoms and causes and the most effective IV treatments for migraines.

Migraine Symptoms and Causes

While the specific cause of migraines is unknown, they’re believed to be the result of pain-producing inflammatory substances being released around the blood vessels and nerves that send a “pain” message to the brain. This can be the result of genetics and triggers like sleep deprivation, skipping meals, certain foods like processed meats, cheeses, and chocolate, caffeine, stress and environmental factors such as bright or flickering lights, changes in barometric pressure, air quality, weather, noise and odors.

The unpredictable nature of migraines means they can last anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days. Migraine symptoms may include:

  • A throbbing, pulsing headache
  • Changes in vision
  • Muscle weakness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Ringing in your ears
  • Sensitivity to light, sound and smell
  • Dizziness
  • Pain around your eyes, jaw or neck

IV Infusions for Migraine Treatment

Along with being aware of migraine triggers and taking steps to adapt your lifestyle accordingly, implementing science-backed IV treatments for migraines can help to provide relief of debilitating symptoms. IV Drip Therapy involves delivering an extensive menu of essential vitamins, nutrients, minerals and amino acids directly into your bloodstream, which allows your body to quickly absorb those nutrients with 100% bioavailability.

In a study of 526 headache patients who were given infusion treatments, 40% of patients reported improved headaches and more than half of the patients reported improved feelings of dizziness.

IV Medication for Migraines

At Restore, we have three specific IV medications for migraines that can be included in a customized IV Drip: Magnesium, Toradol and Zofran.

Magnesium

Magnesium is a mineral found abundantly throughout the body that plays a critical role in more than 300 enzyme systems, including muscle and nerve function, blood pressure control, energy production, protein synthesis and even DNA production. It can help with reducing migraine triggers like stress and sleep deprivation, and it’s also been found to be an effective muscle relaxant and pain reliever—even for migraines.

Several studies show that migraines may be triggered by low magnesium levels, with one finding demonstrating that when people with migraines supplemented with magnesium experienced 42% fewer migraines than before taking the mineral. Another study published in the Pain Physician Journal showed that intravenous magnesium reduced acute migraine attacks and intensity within 15–45 minutes, and that “intravenous magnesium should be adapted as part of a multimodal approach to reduce migraines.”

Toradol

Toradol is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat moderate to severe pain. It works by stopping your body from making a substance called prostaglandin, which is responsible for pain, inflammation and fever and is used in the treatment of everything from joint and musculoskeletal pain to vomiting and migraines.

In a study from the journal Academic Emergency Medicine, they found that in 944 participants who suffer from migraines, Toradol offered better pain relief and fewer side effects than six other migraine medications. Another study found that in patients visiting the emergency room for severe migraines, almost 75% reported a significant decrease in pain after a Toradol injection and that relief lasted for at least six hours.

Zofran

One of the most common symptoms of a migraine is nausea and vomiting, with 65% of participants in one study reporting nausea and 28% reporting it’s their most “bothersome” symptom. Zofran (ondansetron), is a medication commonly used specifically to treat and prevent both nausea and vomiting.

A study from the Journal of Emergency Medicine found that ondansetron is both a safe and effective “first-line agent” for the relief of nausea and/or vomiting for patients in the emergency room. Given the prevalence of both nausea and vomiting for migraine sufferers, this can be an effective addition to help relieve those symptoms.
